3 key qualities of a good real estate agent

1 Aug 14

Being a real estate agent is a highly sought-after career, particularly in the booming market that is the Australian property industry. Before you go through real estate training, ask yourself if you have the key traits needed to succeed in the business. There are a number of qualities that any good agent needs to search out inside him or herself before taking that fateful step.

Are you a people person?

This does not simply mean people skills - though of course the ability to manage relationships and people of all different backgrounds and personalities is essential. To succeed as a real estate agent, you also need to really enjoy talking with and meeting new people, learning about their life story and dedicating yourself to converting their hopes to realities. You can't fake enthusiasm. Buyers and clients both will smell insincerity from a block away.

Be ready to sacrifice

Working in real estate means potentially big rewards earning commission on the properties you sell. But if it was that easy, everyone would be doing it. It's not for those who covet their nine to five work day. If you want to succeed in the real estate game, you'll have to be prepared to work long hours from time to time, sometimes late into the night, as well as working the occasional weekend. You have to go all in to really succeed.

Have ethics and a high degree of trustworthiness

This might seem like just a general piece of life advice, but you'd be surprised how paramount it is in the real estate industry specifically. Remember that you're dealing with large sums of money that have the potential to make or break the people you're dealing with. Not only is dependability and good faith important in this respect, it will also help you retain clients.
